“ I am currently playing with the theme of black on black. Everything in the photographs is either naturally black, or has been sprayed black. ‘Black’ however, is relative. Depending on lighting, exposure, and dodging and burning of the image, black can assume various tonalities, which contribute to the particular “look” of each photograph. Organic elements and mundane objects are employed as subject-matter.

Although digital equipment has been used throughout, my editing methods remain “analogue” in that I try to stick to processes used in a conventional darkroom. There are NO computer gimmicks.” - Ennio Calvani

About Ennio Calvani

Born in Torino, Italy, Ennio immigrated to this country with his family in 1958. He studied Graphic Design at the Johannesburg College of Art, where he developed a love for photography in the second year of study and has pursued it ever since.

He spent two years in the design industry before being invited to teach photography in the Department of Graphic Design at the above institution. This he did for the following thirty-one years until taking early retirement in 2008.
